Our guest author today discusses a common misery in our culture – back pain. If that's you, pay attention to your mattress. Cheap isn't always better.

Most people greatly underestimate the importance of their mattress. It is easy to look for the cheapest option but this is never the right approach when it comes to buying a new mattress. Billions of people across the globe suffer from back problems, in most cases minor but sometimes major pain is involved. These problems are often caused by, or made worse by, having an old or cheap mattress. You should spend around eight hours a day lying on your mattress and if it’s not the right one for you, you could be doing serious damage.

If the time has come to change the mattresses in your home you may wish to consider the following factors:

Firmness – the most important element of any mattress is how firm it is. Some people require the extra support provided by a very firm mattress whilst others require a much softer mattress. You should know what level of firmness you prefer.

Mattress Structure – there are a variety of different mattress structures available and choosing can be difficult. It is always useful to talk to the experts and to gather as much information as possible about the mattress structure that will meet your needs. Pocket sprung and foam are the most common types and the two are often combined.

Size – size is very important. If you are a big person, you need a big mattress – it’s simple. Sleeping on a mattress that is too small for you means that you will have to sleep in uncomfortable and unnatural positions. Don’t skimp; buy the correct size for you. This is especially important if you share you bed with someone else – you both need a good amount of space.

There are plenty of good mattresses out there and you don’t need to spend loads to get one that works for you. It is important to shop around and always try the mattress our before you buy it. Don’t just go for the cheapest option. Spend a little more to keep your back healthy.

Today's guest article is about "hobs". I admit to being puzzled when I first saw this term so, for other equally confused Americans, a hob is a stove or cooktop. Sorry for our abysmal ignorance, all you hob-users.

I love to cook. I really do. I might not be very good at it but I try my best. My lasagne has never failed me yet but I do want to expand my repertoire somewhat. I don’t just want to bang things into an oven and leave it. I want to feel like I’m actually cooking something. This is why I’m looking at the hob for inspiration.

The hob, I believe, is where a chef really gets to make a difference. But there are lots of different types of hobs. Which one do you go for? Well, luckily I’m pretty knowledgeable about these kinds of things (being my job and all), so here’s a quick rundown on what you need to know:

Electric Hobs – Or ceramic electric hobs as they are known, uses an electric heating filament to heat pans. The plus side to these hobs are that they are easy to install and quite easy to clean as they have only one flat surface. Going electric is also a bit easier on the energy bills compared to gas. However, the heat control isn’t as instant as other types of hobs. It takes for the filament to cool if you lower the temperature for example.

Gas Hobs – A classic and still the most popular choice by far, gas cooking offers powerful heating. The benefits of gas hobs are that you get excellent visible heat and near instant controllability. However, they are less energy efficient than electric hobs, and are a little more difficult to clean.

Induction hobs – Very modern and very cool. Using a magnetic field, the pan is the actual heating element, not the hob. This makes it up to 84% more efficient than gas and it’s also much faster. 1 pint of water boils in a minute and a half, compared to 3 minutes with gas! Also, it’s safer to use as the hob won’t get as hot. Cleaning is much easier as food won’t burn and stick. It’s also very fast on the heat control front. The downside is it as the moment it is expensive and the pans have to be magnetic.

At the end of the day, the hob you choose is based on your own preferences and needs. But all offer certain qualities you won’t find on the other. Good hunting!

Halit Bozdogan is a writer for Appliances Online. He loves induction hob technology and considers his lasagne to be first class.

In today's economy, more and more people are turning to real estate as an avenue to build equality and establish savings for that ever looming, “rainy day”. In regards to single family homes, most are offered in foreclosure or at some level of discount due to neglect and disrepair. Quickly putting these homes back on the market is a fundamental step in turning a profit. Saving money in the process is equally as important.

Converting a home into cash requires either one of two obvious directions. Contracting the work needed to bring the structure up to code, and to a liveable condition, is a choice most will lean towards. Doing renovation on your own is the second, yet more ominous of the two choices. Certain areas of the renovation will obviously require a licensed contractor. Plumbing, electrical and designated structural work will only pass inspection when work is performed by a professional.

If you decide to hire a contractor, there are many tasks you can assume to keep costs at a minimum. Begin by hiring a contractor that has no labor costs. In other words, play the role of gopher. Every billable minute your contractor has to haul material, or clean up the job site, is a waste of your money and his time. You do the grunt work and let him concentrate on getting the job done quickly and efficiently.

Finishing touches are a key factor in shaving dollars off of the bottom line. If you can pick up a paint brush, you will save a considerable amount of money. Whether it be ceilings, walls or trim, if you can paint it means money in the bank. Time is certainly a factor. Professional painters are fast and efficient. You will save money however, if you take on the job yourself.

Property auctions are a prime example of sweat equity. From curb appeal to the fundamental mechanics of the household, the more you can do on your own, the more money ends up in your pocket at the end of the day. In regards to landscaping, keep it simple. Utilize shrubs, grass and ground cover that can withstand the elements. You may be sitting on a property for some time, so make sure the grounds look appealing as you show the house. At the end of the day, a clean home that needs TLC will represent itself much better than a dirty home that needs an equal amount of work. You never would try and sell a car covered in mud. Don't attempt to sell a home covered in dust.

If you are building a house and the roof is next on the list, you should consider "EPDM" rubber roofing. This type of roofing is extremely efficient on flat surfaces and since more and more houses are designed to have a flat roof surface, it is easy to understand why EPDM is now so popular. Specialists in constructions say that EPDM rubber roofing prevents the frequent leaks that occur after heavy rain or snow, so it is commonly used in areas with difficult weathering problems.

What is very interesting about this type of roofing is that it is highly appreciated by environmentalists. Studies show that the type of rubber used in EPDM rubber roofing does not pollute the run-off water. Those who fight for the environment even reuse the run off water for sanitary purposes, as it is perfect for watering the garden, for example. As a result, eco-friendly projects always consider using this type of roofing instead of using any other type of material.

Those interested in a short history lesson regarding EPDM roofing will be surprised to hear that it first appeared on the market in the 1960s. In the 1990s, more and more recycling companies started using EPDM and nowadays, the material is used for more than 1 billion square feet of roofs. Adding the yearly surface covered with EPDM to the 20 billion square feet that have already been covered starting with the 1960s, the number is huge.

There are a lot of benefits of EPDM rubber roofing.

* Constructors love the material as result of the fact that it is highly dependable and durable.

* In addition to this, it is extremely efficient and cost effective.

* When you purchase EPDM rubber roofing, you also receive a long warranty and you get instructions on how to maintain it in a good shape. However, it does not require special attention. Those who live in areas with big weather problems won't have to offer it some extra attention thanks to the fact that these roofs have a high resistance to any weather condition.

* Another great benefit of the epdm rubber roofing is represented by the low labor costs. Considering all these benefits, it is easy to understand why the EPDM is recommended to all those who are now building a house, as well as to those who plan on changing the roof.

There are a few considerations about EPDM. For example, experts say that coating the membraneis not recommended. The roof's life will be a much longer one if acrylic coatings are being used and they come in numerous colors, so it is easy to find coatings that match with your preferences.

Also, those who like cleaning the roof on a regular basis should not use abrasive soaps and cleaning liquids because they will severely affect the rubber in time. The warranty will even be voided if the owner uses abrasive cleaning products.

We are very pleased to publish this guest article on finding environmentally-friendly builders and contractors. Eco projects are "in" and lots of people claim to be knowledgable in this field when they're really not. Now we have an objective way to choose contractors.

There's no doubt that green building and remodeling has the potential to benefit the environment, the construction industry and the housing market. So, as a responsible homeowner, it's your job to seek out eco-conscious construction professionals when it's time to build a new house or remodel your current home. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to determine whether contractors take their environmental responsibility seriously. Outside of a need to meet industry and environmental regulations, contractors who choose to build green feel some sort of moral responsibility to:

reduce potential waste and pollution output

avoid harming the environment

use resources efficiently

create healthy indoor environments for homes and offices

Keeping these philosophies in mind, the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) was established to help construction professionals reduce their carbon footprint while still developing sustainable buildings for both commercial and residential use. The IGCC monitors a number of environmental interests, such as:

preserving land and natural resources to be used for development

improving indoor air quality via energy efficient appliances, water conservation, rainwater collection, renewable energy systems and gray water recovery

tracking building system performance to ensure energy efficient practices are being used

customizing the code to accommodate for local conditions as long as the baseline provisions are met

To further promote green building, a number of environmentalists have begun endorsing the use of green performance bonds. Although they have yet to be implemented, green performance bonds would work similarly to other forms of contractor bonding by guaranteeing a certain quality of work. If enforced, green performance bond regulations would offer a financial guarantee that contractors adhere to certain green building expectations. A number of programs and associations are available for construction professionals who promote green building within the construction industry. For example, any contractor can join the Energy & Environmental Building Alliance, which encourages construction professionals to build healthy, safe, durable and energy efficient homes for all clients. When interviewing environmentally friendly construction professionals for your next project, ask about

personal philosophies on green building

views on the International Green Construction Code

thoughts on green performance bonds.

membership in or support of green building programs/associations

The last thing that any homeowner wants to hear is that there is a broken or deteriorated pipe beneath the slab of the house or garage – or under their landscaping or beneath a 100-year-old oak tree. Dealing with broken pipes in difficult situations conjures up nightmare images of dealing with the mess and expense of having to go through extremes in order to replace a pipe that needs to be replaced.

Fortunately, destroying valuable property is not the only way to remedy these types of situations. Thanks to modern trenchless technology, it’s possible to replace many types of broken plumbing pipes without having to dig. While trenchless options do cost more than traditional “open cut” pipe excavations, they are much more cost-effective in the long run if digging would result in additional costs due to extenuating circumstances.

About Trenchless Pipe Replacement

There are generally two different types of trenchless pipe replacement:

(1) cured in place pipe (CIPP) and
(2) pipe bursting

The residential plumber that you are working with can make a recommendation regarding whether trenchless replacement is a foot fit in your situation and determine which one of the two options is most appropriate and cost effective for you.

CIPP

In order to use this technology, one end of the pipe must be accessible; in certain situations a clean out can be used. The plumber will insert a “sock” made out of fiberglass matting that has been soaked in resin through the broken (or host) pipe, inverting it inside out.

There is a bladder inside of the sock that is inflated, holding the sock in place until it cures. After curing (approximately four hours) the bladder is removed and the result is a new fiberglass pipe securely in place inside the original pipe. The original, damaged pipe stays in place and serves as a host for the new one.

This technique does result in a small reduction in inside diameter, which is why it’s generally recommended only to repair plumbing pipes that are at least four inches in diameter.

Residential Pipe Bursting

The pipe bursting method can only be used when both ends of the damaged pipe are accessible. Additionally, it is only viable with pipes made from PVC, clay, cast iron, or another material that can be bursted. There also cannot be any exterior obstructions like footers. With this method, the inside diameter of the pipe is not reduced in the course of making the repair.

In order to make this type of repair, the plumber threads a 3/4” wire logging cable through the existing pipe. A bursting head that houses or is connected to a new high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe is attached to one end of the cable. A hydraulically powered pulling device is attached to the other end.

With brute force, the plumber uses the pulling device to pull the new pipe into place. The bursting head is the shape of a funnel with a shark fin on it. As hydraulic force is used to pull the cable, the head literally splits through the old pipe, and pushes the pieces it into the dirt adjacent to where the old pipe was, leaving in place the new pipe that is attached to the back of the bursting head. When the new pipe reaches the pulling device the plumber then plumbs the pipes back together in the pulling and insertion pits and you have a new pipe in place of where an old defective pipe was.

Cost Estimates

Trenchless pipe replacement costs about twice as much as traditional replacement. For example, trenchless residential plumbing pipe replacement typically costs between $30 to $40 per foot on 4-inch pipe, while replacement done with open cut trenching tends to run between $15 and $20 per foot.

While trenchless technology is certainly not appropriate for every situation because of the cost, it certainly does make sense when the only other option is to have to dig through a concrete slab or some other extenuating circumstance to get to the pipe that needs to be replaced.

Greg Smith is President of Roto-Rooter of Mobile, Alabama.
In times of economic hardship one thing is guaranteed – crime will rise as people become more desperate. The current downturn is no exception and crime is more prominent across the globe. As a result it has never so important to have your home security measures up to date and as strong as possible.

The first thing you need to do is make sure your existing burglar alarms and security locks are fully functional. Good, strong locks on windows and doors are crucial because a huge majority of unwanted guests arrive through doors and windows that have been left unlocked or open. Alarms are important as they not only tell you/others when a break-in is in progress but they also act as a deterrent.

Once you have made sure that your security basics are in order it’s time to add to them. The most standard ways of taking your home security to the next level is to install CCTV and gates. Both are fairly innocuous but may be the difference between an in intruder getting in and getting away or failing to get in and getting caught.

By now your premises will be fairly secure, right? And most criminals won’t take their chances? This is where most people go wrong. Hardened, determined criminals can still gain access quite easily if they have the right tools and knowledge.

To make sure that no one can get into your home and get their hands on your valuable possessions you need to put a physical barrier in front of them. The best way of doing this is to add strong, tested security grilles to all of your lower floor windows and doors, and possibly even to higher floors.

Security grilles are worth getting for the following reasons:

They don’t cost the earth – They are affordable, especially when compared to more elaborate security systems

Unlike most other home security measures they act as a literal barrier that separates would be intruders from your high value possessions

Significantly slows down criminals who are stupid enough to attempt to break in

They are easy to maintain and use

They can be used even when doors and window are open – perfect for urban areas

They don’t look offensive/industrial like roller-shutters – they suit any home

As well as stopping burglars in their tracks they also act as a deterrent – would you take your chances by trying to burgle a home with security grilles?

Properly manufactures and installed grilles are insurance approved

Security grills are an excellent addition to your home security and they really can be the difference between keeping hold of your possessions and losing them forever. It is important to use them as part of an overall security solution, rather than your only measure. Good locks, alarms and CCTV should still be used if you want comprehensive defence and total peace of mind.

Safeguard Security has been the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of top quality security grilles since 1996.
The range cooker is the center of most modern kitchens. It's the workhorse of the kitchen, performing jobs as small as heating up leftovers and as large as cooking a holiday roast. Unfortunately, even the best appliance won't last forever, and the variety of new range cookers can be quite bewildering.

If you're not sure which one you should choose as part of your next kitchen remodel, you're not alone. Many people have trouble choosing between the many different features, styles and sizes on the market. Here's a short guide to choosing your next kitchen range.

Cooker Style

The first decision you'll need to make is whether you prefer a freestanding cooker or a built-in model that blends in with your cabinets. Freestanding stoves are the most common, but they can be inconvenient and are too bulky for some kitchens. Built-ins often have a few extra installation requirements, but they stay out of the way until you need them.

Fuel Type

The next consideration for most people is fuel type. Gas cookers are extremely popular for their controllable heat and low operating costs, but gas isn't available everywhere. People without access to piped natural gas can still use a gas cooker, but they must buy canisters for stove operations. Another option is an electric stove, which provides cleaner heat in areas with no available gas service. Electric cookers are also significantly easier to install without the help of a professional.

Size and Shape

It's easy to get excited about a particular range cooker and forget about whether it will fit in your kitchen. Make sure you measure the space available for your new range before you go shopping. Consider not just the dimensions of the appliance, but also the space available for the oven door, the clearance between the stove and other appliances, and similar factors. There's nothing more frustrating than bringing a brand new appliance home to discover it won't work out.

Cleaning Options

Cleaning your range can be difficult and time consuming, especially if you live a busy lifestyle. Stop and consider the ease of cleaning for each range cooker you're thinking about buying. Stainless steel cookers can be beautiful, for instance, but their bright finish dulls and picks up fingerprints easily. If you're looking for an electric cooker, see if it has an automatic cleaning cycle for the oven. This kind of feature can greatly reduce the amount of work you have to do in order to keep your new appliance clean.

Cooking Techniques

Don't forget to think about how you usually cook. That'll influence the size, type and features of the range cooker you decide to buy. If you don't cook much, you might even be able to deal with a simple two-burner cooker or a small apartment-size stove. If you have a large family or regularly cook for a group, these appliances won't do the trick. You may also require special features if you're an avid baker. Consider getting a range cooker with a convection oven for more even cooking and programmable bake times.

Cooktop Style

Cooktop options have increased greatly over the past few years, making it easier for people with special preferences to choose the kind of range cooker they need. Standard electric coil and gas cooktops are still inexpensive and readily available, but you can also choose several smooth and adjustable styles. These are most appropriate for truly avid cooks who want the most out of their cookers.

For instance, electric smooth top styles use glass or ceramic surfaces with the heating elements placed underneath. These cooktops are easy to clean and cook more quickly than electric coils, but can be fragile. Metal induction cooktops stay cooler and are more energy efficient than traditional styles, but they only work with iron or steel pots. Modular models allow you to swap out traditional electric heating elements with grills, griddles and other extras.

Energy Efficiency

Consider the energy requirements of your new range cooker, too. Many modern features require more power to operate correctly, but this is often balanced by improved efficiency overall. Check for a government rating to indicate the efficiency level of the appliance. You'll save on fuel costs over the lifetime of the appliance, even if more efficient models initially cost more to purchase.

Vintage mid century modern furniture pieces add style to any room in your home. You may choose bold designs from Charles Eames or George Nelson, or the clean lines and simplicity of Alvar Aalto or Paul McCobb. You may even choose sophisticated elegant designs from Milo Baughman or Mies van der Rohe. Whatever style you favor, mid century modern pieces add an element of glamour and evoke a nostalgic remembrance of the simplicity of yesteryear.

We are all familiar with the phrase "everything old can be new again". This is true especially for those in the market of mid century modern furniture pieces. Prized for bright colors, smooth design, and sleek lines, new pieces are being manufactured today that echo the sensibility of the 1950's and 60's. For purists of home furnishings, these reproductions are not as sought after as the actual vintage furniture, but they allow anyone to add a touch of mid century charm to their living spaces. Whether you redo your whole home, a single room, or even just get an accent piece or two, the right mid century modern furniture pieces can elevate any living space.

The Popularity of Mid Century Modern Furniture Pieces

Many people believe that resurgence in popularity of vintage furniture has been fuelled by old reruns of 50's and 60's TV shows, and more recently by the popularity of AMC's Mad Men. The furniture was smart and minimal in design, with nothing ornamental weighing it down. Unlike the over-the-top brightly colored aesthetic of the 70's, design from this period showed restraint and sophistication. The spaces had room to breathe, and an inherent order existed in the lines and shapes. Incorporating modern vintage furniture into the homes should follow this basic same principle.

A plethora of textures, designs, colors and lines were implemented into the creation of mid century modern furniture pieces. A simple contemporary look is emphasized in the pieces inspired by this era, with the implementation of vibrant colors contrasted by the warmth and beauty of teak. Examples of furniture include the Eames fiber glass chairs and Eero Saarinen womb chair. These are two of the most iconic mid century modern furniture pieces.

Modern mid century furniture pieces are known for sleek lines, durability and functionality. Buying retro furniture from this time period is quite different than buying used furniture. Buying vintage furniture can be considered an investment. Because of its innovation in the use of materials and aesthetic appeal, many people view modern mid century furniture pieces as works of art. As more people collect them, the prices of modern vintage furniture keep increasing. This is in direct opposition to regular furniture, which will steadily decrease in value.

Materials Used in Mid Century Modern Furniture Pieces

Mid century furniture would not be what it is without the excellent use of cutting edge materials. Materials like plastic and plexiglass were just becoming readily abundant at the time, providing designers with new inspiration to take their work into new directions.

Bakelite on table tops and the use of plexiglass by Florence Knoll and Herman Miller implement the man-made materials into beautiful master pieces. An excellent example is the Herman Miller Eames LAR low arm chair which is made of fiber glass. Another perfect example is Saarinen's tulip chair, as it is considered an iconic masterpiece.

Whether your ambitions include outfitting a whole room with vintage furniture or just incorporating a piece here and there, there is an abundance of interesting and beautifully designed pieces you can choose from. Sofas, chairs, artwork, and clocks are among the more popular pieces, but are by no means an exhaustive list of what you can find available. You may also discover dazzling accent pieces and accessories.

The current popularity of mid century modern furniture pieces reflects a yearning for simplicity in an increasingly complicated digital world. The aesthetics are clean, yet comforting, sophisticated, yet plain and unassuming. They manage to echo the past while being quite modern in design and functionality.

Mid Century Modern Sofas and Chairs

The chairs and sofas from the mid century period are particular favorites. These 1950s and 1960 sofas have a timeless quality to them which allows them to look equally at home in ultra-modern spaces as they do surrounded by other retro pieces and accessories. The designers responsible for these masterpieces were ahead of their time, as evidenced by the popularity of such pieces to this day.
