Generally, children are not at risk from electric shock in most homes these days. But it only takes a momentary lapse in concentration for this situation to reverse itself, and in doing that a home can become dangerous for children very quickly. Most of the time we are very vigilant around the home where electrics are concerned. But we can always do more to make the home safer still by following some simple rules and checks.

The first thing we all need to look at, particularly if there is a toddler around the house, is to check any cables that are lying on the floor. They need to be removed so that the child is unable to pull the appliance down on top of themselves using the cable. It only takes a second for the toddler to do this and it only takes a moment to prevent such an accident. More children are hurt by pulling loose cables and having items fall on them, than receiving electric shocks from the equipment. Using cable-tidy systems can help keep those TV cables out of the reach of young children.

If you do have to have cables on the floor now would be a good time to check the insulation on the cable. Find out if the insulation is still inserted all the way inside the plug top. Check for damage to the insulation. If the cable is damaged in any way, then it needs to be taken out of service and either disposed of or rewired by a competent electrician as soon as possible. If you have any empty sockets have some socket covers fitted so that your child cannot poke anything inside.

If you have had some of your equipment in the house for a period of time and it starts to look old and worn it may be advisable to have the equipment checked out by someone qualified in the testing of Portable Appliances (PAT testing). Just because the piece of equipment looks OK does not mean that it is safe to use and it is very wise to have the equipment checked occasionally. If you are renting your property then the portable appliances within the home should be checked by the landlord every year as part of your rental agreement. Of course if you own your home then the onus will be on you to have these appliances checked. Items that are likely to cause issues are old fridges, old cookers and old irons, and particularly old heaters that you may have.

Apart from the checking of the portable appliances in your home it is advisable to have your electrics checked on your house. The wiring on your house is not the easiest of things to inspect. Most of the time it all looks good, but how do you know it’s working correctly? Most of the faults that I find in house when testing them revolve around the ring main (socket circuits). The UK is one of a few countries around the world that still wire their sockets in this fashion. Ring mains are notorious for having faults on them, faults which are undetectable, but under faulty conditions can cause problems. It is therefore wise to have you electrics checked out on a regular basis and by a qualified NICEIC electrician.

This is particularly wise if you live in a house that has the old style consumer unit with pull out fuses, as this type of fuse does not offer the occupants any sort of supplementary protection in the same way that a modern fuse board that is fitted with RCD (Residual Current Device) protection.

What Do Other DeLonghi Owners Think of the ESAM3330?

At the time of this review, there are 130+ customer reviews and most of them are very happy. There are two complaints that are common.

1. The machine is noisy. I've never been around such a machine that wasn't loud but obviously that bothers some folks.

2. There is no way to pre-set the brewing time. If you want to wake up to the smell of fresh espresso, you will need to attach your machine to a timer.

My neighbor has this machine and I've had many cups of cappuccino at her kitchen table. Personally, I'm not a big coffee drinker and would never drink an espresso. But her cappuccinos and lattes are as good as Starbucks!
