Choosing the right bed sizes for your (or your children’s) beds is extremely important both for sleeping comfort and for practical reasons (the bedding and linen will have to be the same size as the bed). However there is a lot of confusion around bed sizes’ names. For example, what’s the difference between a Twin and a Single bed? Or between Queen and King sizes? Even an experienced salesperson from a bed store can have problems with explaining the differences (or the lack of them).
Twin (Single) and Extra-long Twin beds:
Twin and Single bed sizes essentially mean the same. They are 39" wide x 75" long and this small size makes them perfect for children and early teenagers. As most of them are also bunk beds, they can be useful if your child makes overnight party.
An Extra-long Twin bed is 5” longer while having the same width as a standard Twin bed. The difference in length between these bed sizes makes Extra-long Twin bed the most common choice for colleges to accommodate the taller students.
Double (Full) and Queen beds:
Double and Full bed sizes are the same: 54” x 75”. They fit easily in every bedroom, but many couples find them too small for comfortable sleep and they go for Queen beds instead. A Queen bed is 6” wider than a Full bed and thus they give more space for sleeping.
The problem is that for many people both bed sizes are too small – even the Queen size beds are found too narrow. That’s where King sizes come.
King sizes:
There are two bed sizes called “King” – The Standard King (Eastern King) and the California King (Western King). The first one is 18” wider than Queen (76”x 80”, total), the second is narrower, but longer: 72”x 84”. Beds of these sizes are usually sold in parts to make them easier to move.
