Windows treatments may not one of the first things you think about when designing your dream home, but maybe they should be. Why?
Simply because window treatments come in a wide variety of styles and each of them will have a different effect on the final appearance of your home. Window treatments will have to contend with windows which might be angled, circular, standard or even eyebrow arched.
You will have to plan the windows to suit both the exterior and interior of your home, allowing for chair rails, baseboards, and even drapery length. Draperies will not hang evenly unless your windows are centered, with equal space on either side.
If you really want to place a window so close to the corner of a room that there is no room to pull a corner side drape back, consider an alternative window treatment like blinds.
And you need to make sure your draperies are wide enough so that, when fully extended, they will cover your entire windows.
You’ll have to have enough room for your drapery brackets so leave at least two inches between the top of the windows and your ceilings. And if you’re going with a wood drapery header, have it abut the ceiling and mount your heavier drapes directly to it. If you’ve opted to mount your brackets directly into the wall, you’ll need toggle or molly bolts to secure them as well as possible.

In rooms where you want to use interior shutters or two-inch plantation wooden blinds, allow at least two-and-one-half inches of depth. And if you have a single window opening with double or triple windows, place a strip of divider between them. Account for this when you measure your depth as well.
And if you window is actually a sliding glass door, included four inches for the handle in your depth measurement.
French doors, while adding a definitely elegant touch to a home, will usually swing inwards into a room. If you are using a valance with a set of French doors, either mount it directly to them or arrange to have the doors swing outward. And if you want to add shutters, blinds, or shades to them, keep the locks and handles in mind.
No matter what style of windows you choose, your final job will be to make certain all of them are accessible. This includes even those in an unfinished attic; you never know when you are going want to make use of that extra space with a den or guest room.
