Futon beds are beds without frames. Basically, futon beds are a kind of mattress that can be put directly on a floor. The idea was well known for college and university students, but it has only recently started to incite the interest of room decorators.
Origins of the futon:
Futon beds were born in Japan. For centuries Japanese slept on thin futon mattresses instead of European-style beds. The whole set was composed only of a thin futon mattress, a bed and a pillow. You can see the original futon beds by watching any anime movie – this bedding is still very popular in Japan.
Benefits of having futon beds in your house:
(1) Futon beds can be easily rolled up and put somewhere, leaving a lot of free space. It is especially important if you have limited space in your apartment.
(2) They are much easier to move. Futon beds can be moved anywhere without any transportation problems.
(3) Futon beds are usually cheaper than their “frame-and-mattress” counterparts of the same size.
(4) In many bedroom styles, futon beds are much better looking than standard beds.
(5) Many doctors believe that futon beds can much healthier, especially for people with back problems.
Problems with the futon:
While futon beds are an excellent solution for most situations, they aren’t perfect. First, many people just can’t get used to sleeping “on the floor” and they need to sleep somewhere higher in order to feel comfortable.
The second difficulty is (sometimes) temperature. Futon beds can insulate you from the cool floor, but they are unable to insulate you from the cool air. The closer to the floor, the lower air temperature. In most cases it’s not relevant, but sometimes futon beds will be colder than standard ones.
