House Shutters: How To Buy The Perfect Shutters For Your House

You’re in the market for house shutters, and you have some decisions to make …

The first of them will be to choose the material from which your house shutters will be made, but it’s not a very difficult one.  If you want this to be the only time you have to buy shutters, make sure the shutters you get are wood.  For quality and longevity, wooden shutters are simply the best option.

Next, you’ll have to decide on a shutter style.  Traditional shutters have narrow panels and one-and-one-quarter inch thick, narrow wedge-shaped louvers, with their fronts being thicker than their backs.  Plantation shutters, on the other hand, are one-and-one-eight inches thick, with wider louvers.

You’ll also have to decide whether to paint, or stain, your shutters.  There are even paints colored to look like stain.  The stains will allow the wood grain of your shutters to show, and are available in shades from nearly transparent to nearly black. And neither shutters made of synthetic materials nor can wood composites be stained or painted.

You’ll have to settle on a price range for your shutters; many brands of house shutters are priced by the square foot, and all of them will be priced depending on the materials from which they are made.  Prices will vary according to the exact dimensions of your windows, the number of panels in each shutter, and the style and finish you choose.

Shutters are assembled in units, which will vary as to the amount of panels used.  The number of panels will depend on whether the shutters style is traditional or plantation and the windows’ widths; because traditional shutter panels are narrower, traditional shutters will require more panels.

Every shutter manufacturer provides guidelines to help you determine the number of panels each of your windows will need.  Taller windows may demand a double-tiered shutter, with a separate set of shutters on both the top and bottom of the window.

Double-tiered shutters open independently of each other.  An alternative to the double-tiered shutter is a single panel, with a hinged horizontal divider bar creating upper and lower sections.

Carefully measure your windows according to the manufacturer’s instructions, ant then look at their installation instructions for your type of window.  If you are having a hard time with the directions, or they don’t seem detailed enough, call the company for assistance.  If none is offered, look around for a different manufacturer because your house shutters are too important to "settle" for when you wish something different..
