Hugger Ceiling Fans: Least Space Between Blades & Ceiling With Hugger Ceiling Fans

Because of their innovative designs, Hugger ceiling fans have created a loyal audience that snaps up every new style. The competitive nature of the ceiling fan market has, for the past several years, been such that ceiling fan manufacturers have felt constant pressure to introduce product modifications and innovations.

And, as a further survival tactic, many ceiling fan companies have resorted to questionable marketing schemes in trying to attract customers.  But, as any educated consumer is aware, most new products lack staying power, and disappear from the market in a relatively short time.

One innovation introduced by the ceiling fan industry, in its attempt to compete by strengthening its niche in the home cooling market, is the hugger ceiling fan.

After much research, ceiling fan manufacturers turned to the hugger design as a new way of attracting or maintaining both residential and commercial customers.

Exactly how do hugger ceiling fans differ from fans of standard design?  While traditional ceiling fans hang suspended from the ceiling, hugger ceiling fans are engineered so that there is a minimal amount of space between the ceiling and the fan’s blades. The fan almost “hugs” the ceiling’s surface; hence the name “hugger ceiling fan”.

A hugger ceiling fan, providing maximum clearance between its blades and a room’s floor, is the ideal solution for a low-ceilinged room.  It is, however, not without a drawback.

Because of the narrow distance between a hugger ceiling fan’s blades and the room’s ceiling, the amount of air the fan can circulate will be reduced.  So it will not be moving as much air, as quickly, as you may be used to. In that respect, the hugger ceiling fan design is less effective than the standard design.

It would, in the interests of safety, be advisable to install hugger ceiling fans only in structures with an eight-foot floor-to—ceiling distance, and a gap of between five and seven inches between the ceiling and the fan’s blades.

However, if you plan to install your hugger ceiling fan over a dining table or a bed, you can increase its distance from the ceiling, as people will not be walking beneath it.

Installing a hugger ceiling fan at a greater than normal distance from the ceiling can be somewhat tricky.  If you plan to do it, first get advice about the best way to proceed from a home improvement expert or specialist at the store from whom you bought your fan.  That’s the best way to be sure you understand the specific requirements of hugger ceiling fan installation.
