Mission Office Furniture

The wood-finished design of mission office furniture provides class and austerity in the work space. However, knowing how mission furniture began would allow you to fully appreciate the elegance offered by this type of furniture.

The design of mission furniture was conceived from a generic chair used for the Swedenborgian Church of the New Jerusalem located in San Francisco. The rustic design of the chair drawn from the Spanish missions of that particular sector became the basis of “mission furniture”.

As the years progressed, mission furniture garnered more attention due to its ability to combine both the designs of the Arts and Craft movement in Britain and the Art Noveau in France.  The revival of Victorian-style design of the Arts and Craft movement during the later part of the 19th century was a reaction towards the upsurge of the Industrial Age.

People during those times were looking for something authentic and put the value of handicraft over the machine-made products that were making headway. On the other hand, Art Noveau is a movement which puts premium on flowing designs and floral-inspired themes. Having both of these movements shine through the designs of mission furniture create an appearance that feels organic and alive.

However, the style of mission office furniture has taken a life of its own during the early 1900s and evolved in such a style that is familiarized by people today. A lot of designers produced this particular style, and one of the more familiar designers during its inception is Gustav Stickley, owner of the Craftsman Workshops firm and is celebrated for the quality and design of his products. Other seminal designers rounding up the list are Joseph McHugh and Elbert Hubbard.

In today's world, the mission office furniture are one of the more popular types of furniture sold in the market. Despite the fact that more than a hundred years have passed, mission furniture are still a choice by offices to decorate rooms of people who hold an important position in the company.

Although the designs have yet to accommodate other factors that are highly regarded by today's line of furniture such as the comfort and construction, the high quality and well-developed designs of mission furniture cannot be denied.  Just as this type of furniture provide sophisticated appearances that is reminiscent of the Victorian Era, it is also able to appear homely and cozy, making visitors and people alike feel welcome when entering the room.

So, if you plan to have furniture that boasts of class, respectability, and conventionality, then you might want to have your own mission office furniture.
