Bring Some Christmas Cheer To Your Kitchen

When you're decorating your home, don't forget your kitchen! Here are a few ways to feel festive while you fix the eggnog.

We’ve all been watching the pennies a bit this year, keeping a bit of money back just in case, but now that Christmas is approaching and the 'feelgood facto'r of the holiday season is starting to kick in, the purse strings are getting loosened a little. While the priority is undoubtedly on all the expenditure required over Christmas, there may well be a little bit left over to put towards a revamp of your kitchen. The makeover ideas suggested below actually cost very little but can give a new lease on life to your kitchen and are sure to impress all the guests who descend on you! With that in mind, where better to start than your kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts?

Replacement

If you do have a bit of money burning a hole in your pocket then new doors and drawer fronts are a very quick fix and will keep the kitchen looking fresh for years. There are always plenty of sales on at this time of year so you can pick up some real bargains, and just putting the new doors on will lift the appearance of your whole kitchen. If you want, you can also update the knobs and handles to something different, as these will just add to the effect and take no more than a few minutes to change.

Repaint

If your budget doesn’t stretch to replacing the doors in your units, then consider painting them instead. It will work with solid wood doors but will require some preparation as you’ll have to remove any old paint or covering and sand down the surface so that there are no lumps or bumps. Once you’ve done that, you can paint or stain them in whatever colour you like and it will give a fresh new look to your kitchen.

Recover

If you’ve got the more common MDF type kitchen cupboard doors, these can still be re-finished by you and made to look brand new. They are wrapped in a thin layer of vinyl, and this can be removed with careful cutting using a craft knife. Once you’ve removed the cover, sand down any obvious blemishes or bumps, and apply a new layer of vinyl. In principal it’s not a lot different to wrapping a Christmas present, as you do each door with a single piece of vinyl and as long as it’s all kept smooth, and has the folds in the right places, it will look fantastic.

And Just For Christmas …

One final idea to brighten up the kitchen over Christmas is to apply wrapping paper or decorations to your kitchen cupboard doors. Obviously it’s only a temporary measure, but it will add a bit of sparkle and get people talking. It’s also extremely easy to do and won’t take more than a few minutes as all you need to do is cut the paper to size and secure it to the doors, or cut patterns to suit and apply those with tinsel and decorations instead.
