Cabinet Refacing: Kitchen Cabinet Refacing Is Cheaper Than Replacement

Cabinet refacing is a cheaper alternative to complete cabinet replacement. The process involves replacing kitchen cabinet doors and drawers’ fronts and refacing the cabinet faces with wood or other material to make them look new again.

Before you start your cabinet refacing project:

Cabinet refacing is easier and less time-consuming than buying and installing new cabinets, but it still needs some time and work. Before you start the cabinet refacing, you should at least think about one other thing – maybe simple change of hardware will be enough? It takes only a day or so and the effects might be similar.

You should proceed with cabinet refacing only when you’re sure that new knobs and pulls won’t be enough to restore a fine look of your kitchen.

Buying replacements for your cabinets:

When you decide, start your cabinet refacing from choosing the fronts that will match the style of the cabinets. Unfortunately, you can’t just buy whatever you want and expect it to look OK. The replacements you’ll use for cabinet refacing must fit the color and style of your old ones.

Cutting cabinets to the exact shape:

Do your best to get doors and facing that will be the right size. But if it is impossible, don’t worry. You can always cut them to the right size and shape or hire someone to do this for you. Performing cabinet refacing using self-cut doors won’t be more difficult and the effects will be comparable.

Installation process:

Remove hinges and install the new ones, so the new doors will fit into the cabinet. As soon as they’re installed, start refacing the cabinet using veneer and wood surfaces or Rigid Thermo Foil method. Both of them are good and easy to do, so the method of cabinet refacing you’ll use depends only on your personal preferences.

Your final cabinet results:

The cabinet refacing shouldn’t take longer than three days of work. If you’ve done everything right (or if you’ve hired some professionals), your cabinets should look like completely new ones.
