Oriental Rug & Carpet: Why Are Oriental Carpets & Rugs Unique?

An oriental rug & carpet is a wonderful addition to any home. What’s more, they are also a good investment because of their longevity. The main difference between oriental rugs and their western counterparts is that their pile (usually made from wool) is tied to their foundation. Oriental rugs and carpets have about 100 knots per square inch. They are hand-made and that also adds to their cost. Today oriental rugs and carpets are made from both natural wool and manmade fibers (usually nylon and polyester).

Colors and themes on oriental rugs and carpets:

Designs of oriental rugs and carpets are strongly influenced by Islam. That is why they are usually covered only with geometrical or plant motifs. Only on Persian rugs you may find birds and animals. This is because Islam prohibits the representation of human or animal life in its art.

Today both natural and synthetic dyes are used when creating oriental rugs and carpets. Rugs using natural dyes cost approximately 30% more than those with synthetic dyes.

The main colors of rugs haven’t changed for centuries and are blue, green, yellow, red, orange, coral, and aubergine. In some oriental rugs and carpets you can find three to four shades of the same color, resulting in a rug with sixteen or more colors total.

Maintenance of oriental rugs & carpets:

All rugs gradually wear out as they are walked on. You can’t avoid it, but turning or rotating your rug may slow this process. You should wash your oriental rug or carpet every five-six years, and it’s a good idea to employ professionals for this task. If you decide to do it yourself, do not shake or beat it - you should use a vacuum cleaner instead.
